What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a virus transmitted to the people by Aedes mosquitoes. It causes severe fever and Joint pain. This is not a contagious disease. Chikungunya is not a fatal disease.

The virus is spread to another person with the blood contact of an infected individual.

In most of the cases, this type of transmission of a virus from an infected person to another person is done by the mosquitoes.

Causes of Chikungunya

Chikungunya is caused by the bite of an infected female Aedes species mosquito – Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus. It is spread to another person via blood contact.

Typically, the risk of getting bitten by these mosquitos are happening in the day time.

Symptoms of Chikungunya fever

These symptoms will occur in 3 to 7 days
